Gaga for Bizerca
If you want to experience one of Cape Town’s greatest bistro-style adventures, then you better head over to Bizerca. The setting is bistro style with a French twist and the simplistic interior allows guests to focus on whats important here, the food.
When Laurent and Cyrillia opened the doors of Bizerca 4 years ago, little did they know that this quirky little bistro will become one of the country’s top and most loved restaurants. Their friends called them bizerca (berserk) when they decided to pack up their lives in Australia and France after 17 years and move back to South Africa. The name stuck, and their crazy relocation has paid off with instant accolades.
Get ready to throw your diet out of the window when you visit Bizerca. The food here is so good, you don’t want the dining experience to end. The menu offers authentic French fare but with a light modern touch. There are only 6 permanent dishes on the menu and the rest of the tantalizing offerings changes on a daily bases. Only the best and freshest ingredients are used. Fresh fish is delivered daily, small local producers are staunchly supported and the pork comes from happy acorn-fed pigs.
Nothing makes a meal more special than a well-chosen bottle of wine, and that is most easily accomplished with a well-appointed wine list. Here you will find an excellent selection of wines by glass and bottle at reasonable prices.
All 14 tables in the restaurant were occupied on the evening of our visit. The one thing that I noticed was the lack of music which could have added a bit more atmosphere to the place. The service throughout the evening was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient yet not intrusive.
Our starters were phenomenal! My Duo of Tuna was delightfully fresh and overwhelmingly tasty. My partner’s fresh Porcini Fricassee with Chorizo was out of this world and easily one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. Both dishes offered great, bold flavours and lovely contrast of textures.
For mains my partner opted for their famous braised pig trotter with a seared scallop and truffle oil. It was softer than marrow and decadently rich. The meat of my Provencale lamb stew was jaw-droppingly tender. Almost too tender. The rich flavours of the dish complemented my glass of Morkel Malbec perfectly and my tastebuds were in culinary heaven.
Don’t forget to save some space for dessert. It was an absolute highlight. I had the chocolate fondant and Crème brûlée with a berry sorbet which was perfect in every way.
Overall we had a magical experience at Bizerca. The food was 5 star, the wines world class and the service impeccable. It’s the type of place where you can enjoy fine French cuisine at a competitive price. Laurent and Cyrillia are proud of what they do, and how they do it. Their passion and love for food and the restaurant industry can be tasted in every bite and this is what makes Bizerca one of our country’s pride and joys!
